E32. Softwares I use (as of January 98)

This list is not describing accurately about which programs I use or used or will use, but just shows which programs I use thesedays compared to a year ago.

3D Studio Max 1.2 is the most important program for me thesedays, and is the basis of any 3-dimensional modeling I do start out and will take more importance from now on, along with a bunch of 3DS Max plugins. My hardware is not powerful enough to run Softimage 3D yet, and I run Lightwave 3D 5.5 occasionally.

For the 3-D modeling purpose, I also use AutoCAD R10 and R13 to lay out plan and extrude it. KPT Bryce2 is handy for making the 3-D background to go along with 3-D objects, but is not powerful enough for the professional quality works.

As for NURB modeling, I used Rhinoceros Beta version so far, but will try 3DStudio Max R2 for its NURB modeler.

3DSMax to VRML Exporter is the major tool for me to generate VRML file. After that I use text editor to modify the data, and run Cosmo Player 2 to view it. I'm looking for a better VRML tool under Windows95 and Linux.

After the 3-D rendering is generated, using Adobe Photoshop 4 is indispensible for the touch-ups. Probably Photoshop is the single most important graphics program. Any of my graphics is touched up by Photoshop. Fractal Design Painter is a freehand style sketching and painting program I found it becoming indispensible for digital graphics.

GifConstruction Set is still handy for making animated gifs for WEB graphics, and Thumbs Plus 3.1 for making thumbsnails of graphics images.

HyperSnap is for screen capturing to be used for the interactive tutorials, and I use hardly any other programs as Photoshop does most of the jobs I need to accomplish.

For the animation, I use 3DS Max and Character Studio, and am learning Hash Animation Master these holidays. As SGI is not available for me, I can do much animations, even though I can concentrate on 3-D modeling and rendering with Windows95, NT and Linux machines.

MS Word has been my tool for word processing over ten years, and I use ARaeA Hangul for Korean text and NJ Star Chinese/Japanes for Chinese and Japanese texts. Unionway and NJStar CJK (Chinese, Japanese and Korean) viewer are essential for viewing CJK texts in Internet under MS Windows.

For coding, emacs and vi are must under both UNIX and win32 version for Windows95 and NT.

My internet applications are run strictly under Windows95 these days. Netscape Communicator 4.04 is doing most jobs of browsing/emailing/newsreading, except for ftping using CuteFTP. Vocaltec's InternetPhone 5 is still good for internet telephoning and Real Player 5 is the most popular streaming audio format for live audio.

PGP is a must for internet privacy and I still use PGP 2.62 and found PGPFone is worth trying if you are so paranoic on security.

I haven't used C or LISP almost for a year. Instead, lots of HTML programming was done for building web pages, and Java/Javascript coding to enhance homepage (or make it worse). As for building homepage, the design of it takes more time than coding it.

Building 3-D Model with 3DStudio Max and plugins, and and touching up with Photoshop, and writing with MS Word take most of working and computer hours for me. Along the way, lots of troubleshooting and digital laundrying is unavoidable.

As for doing computer work, only the final output is counted not the processes. So I think describing how I do it is not important at all, but many people asks me how I do it. Ask, you shall get it! (Jan-1-98)
